Frances MacCreighton Chellis (1924-2023)


Frances MacCreighton Chellis died peacefully in her home on March 14, 2023 in New London, New Hampshire at the age of 98.


Frances was born on September 2, 1924 in Windsor, NH to Charles and Florence MacCreighton. She attended school in Grafton, NH.


In February of 1945, she married Shirley B. "Stubby" Chellis, whom she had known since childhood. The couple started their family by first welcoming a son and then a daughter a few years later. After several moves, Frances and "Stubby" settled in New London in 1954.


Frances and her husband were received into full membership of the New London First Baptist Church in 1956. They both served as Sunday school teachers and church ushers in their younger years. In her later years Frances attended church services virtually and started each day by reading her bible and several spiritual publications.


Her children remember her as a hard-working homemaker, caregiver and gardener. Besides raising her own two children, Frances at various times also cared for neices, nephews, and friends' children. She spent many hours gardening and picking and canning vegetables.

Frances loved her view of Mount Sunapee. She was an animal lover and enjoyed her yard and the wildlife that often visited plus her owns pets.


Frances was predeceased by siblings, Nellie Austin, Evelyn Holden, Glen MacCreighton, and Theron "Sam" MacCreighton.


Surviving family members include her daughter Jean Chellis of New London, NH; a son and his wife, Stephen S. Chellis and Vickie Ellis of New London, NH; a grandson Stephen and two great grandchildren.


A graveside service will be held in Old Main Street Cemetery, New London, NH in the spring.
